What soil is made up of ?

Soil is made up of stones, sand, clay , silt and bits of dead animals and plants. Living things such as worms and ants are found in the soil.

The heaviest things will sink to the bottom of the bottles. Above them are layers of lighter things. Some dead plants and animals float in the water.

Garden soil

There are different types of soil. Garden soil contains small stones, sand, silt and clay. The colour of garden soil is black or brown because they contain more dead plants and animals.

Sandy soil

Sandy soil contains bits of small stones and bigger stones. They can be as big as green beans. Sandy soil is yellowish.

Clay soil

Clay soil is made up of very small pieces of stones.

Clay soil is red or grey

Garden soil is black or brown because they contain more dead plants and animal. Therefore garden soil is suitable to plant vegetables and fruits. They will grow very well.
